The technique for mouth-blown glass was perfected before the rise of the Roman Empire and grew in popularity while the Roman civilization flourished. The mouth blowing technique (also known as free-blowing) has been used to create glass around the world for centuries. The process includes blowing short bursts of air into a molten glass which is gathered at one end of a glass crafter’s tool known as a blowpipe. Over the time this glass blowing technique, has undergone several transformations in order to manufacture some of the finest artworks that have ever been produced.

Mouth-blown ``hand-made`` bottles were produced by skilled craftsmen who gathered the extremely hot glass onto a blowpipe manually then formed the bottle with air pressure applied by mouth to the blowpipe, with or without the aid of a mold.
Hand blowing glass takes a significant amount of time, even for one simple bottle. Each piece took meticulous skill to ensure that the glass was the correct temperature, thickness, and shape.
